Dr Maria Mercedes Rossi

Mara Rossi My name is Maria Mercedes Rossi. I was born in Rimini, Italy, in 1956.

I took the degree in Medicine (MD) and the Speciality in Infectious Diseases in Bologne, Italy. In 1987, I took the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London (D.T.M.& H) and in 1998, the Master in Public Health.(MPH) in Antwerpen (Belgium).

I am a Catholique lay sister member of the Association “Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII”.

After my studies, I lived and worked from 1988 as missionary doctor under the Catholic Diocese of Ndola, in the Copperbelt Province, Zambia, for 20 years.

  • I was for 8 years Consultant for the Community-Based Rehabilitation Program for the mentally retarded persons (Epilepsy program) of the Catholic Diocese of Ndola.
  • I worked 4 years as voluntary MD (part-time) at Chifubu Government Health Centre-Ndola.
  • From 1989 to 1994 I did voluntary service as Medical Officer in the first Home Care programme for the chronically ill and AIDS patients in the Copperbelt (Ndola HCP).
  • I have been Medical Advisor of Red Cross, Ndola branch for 2 years.
  • From 1994 to 1998, I worked as Assistant AIDS Co-ordinator in the AIDS Department of the Catholic Diocese of Ndola (Integrated AIDS Programme) and from 1999 up to 30th September 2002 I took over the task of AIDS Co-ordinator in the programme.-
  • From 2002 up to January 2008 I have been in charge of a Consulting room in Cicetekelo Youth Project.
  • From 1995 up to February 2008, I have been the Responsible of the Association Pope John 23rd in Zambia.
  • From March 2009, I'm the representative and contact person of the Association Pope John 23rd at the United Nations in Genève.
